South African forward Cassius Mailula scored for Wydad Casablanca in their final group game against Al Ain in the FIFA Club World Cup.

However, the Moroccan team’s lead was overturned by their United Arab Emirates counterparts, and Al Ain went on to win 2-1 on Thursday evening.

Wydad’s defeat at the Audi Field in Washington, United States, means they lost all three matches in their group to Al Ain (1-2), Juventus (1-4), and Manchester City (0-2).

They will only receive a participation fee of $9.55 million (R170 million in today’s exchange rate).

Wydad picked up six yellow cards at a cost of $12,000 each for a total of $72,000 (R1.3 million), which will be deducted from their participation fee.

Meanwhile, Wydad are expected to finalise the respective futures of Mailula and Thembinkosi Lorch, the two South Africans in their books.

Mailula has been on loan from MLS side Toronto, with Lorch also on the same terms from Mamelodi Sundowns.

Wydad are keen to keep the duo on a permanent basis and negotiations continue with the parent clubs.
