Deputy President Paul Mashatile has moved to reassure South Africans about his health, saying his recovery from a recent “minor” medical procedure is progressing well but that his doctors have advised him to continue resting.

Mashatile gave the update in a statement released on social media on Tuesday as questions continued over his health and absence from some official duties.

In the statement, the Deputy President said he was regaining strength each day and would remain on rest until his doctors advised him otherwise.

“On the advice of my doctors, I will continue resting until advised otherwise,” Mashatile said.

He assured South Africans that government work was continuing despite his temporary absence, with delegated responsibilities being handled by his office team in collaboration with stakeholders across government, business and other sectors.

Mashatile expressed gratitude to his family and the medical team caring for him, as well as his colleagues in government and the African National Congress.

He singled out President Cyril Ramaphosa and members of the public who had sent messages of support during his recovery.

He said the prayers and encouragement from South Africans had been a source of strength.

The Deputy President also sought to underline his continued commitment to his responsibilities, saying he looked forward to returning to work fully once cleared by his doctors.

“I remain dedicated to the responsibilities entrusted to me, and I look forward to returning to my duties in full, serving our nation with renewed energy and commitment,” he said.
