Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is set to rejoin his 13 co-accused in the R228 million Medicare 24 Tshwane District corruption case when the matter returns to the Pretoria Regional Court on 29 September.
The Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Friday postponed Matlala’s case to allow for his return to the main matter, where he is expected to stand trial alongside the other accused.
Matlala and his two companies had previously been separated from the main case after he indicated that he intended to enter into a plea and sentence agreement with the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption.
However, Matlala subsequently decided not to proceed with the proposed agreement.
This resulted in his case being transferred back to the Pretoria Regional Court, where the main matter involving the other accused is being heard.
The charges stem from the alleged irregular awarding of a contract worth approximately R228 million to Medicare 24 Tshwane District, a company owned by Matlala.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), through IDAC, confirmed that Matlala and his companies are expected to be rejoined with the other accused when the matter resumes next week.
The case centres on allegations of corruption linked to the awarding of the multimillion-rand public contract.
The NPA has not indicated that the accused have been convicted of any wrongdoing, and the allegations remain before the court.
Matlala’s decision not to proceed with the plea and sentence agreement means that he will now face the criminal proceedings together with the other accused in the main matter.
The Specialised Commercial Crime Court’s postponement on Friday clears the way for the case to return to the regional court.
The 13 other accused are already part of the main proceedings relating to the Medicare 24 Tshwane District contract.
The NPA said IDAC remains committed to pursuing corruption cases and holding accountable those implicated in the alleged unlawful awarding of public contracts.
The Medicare 24 Tshwane District matter has attracted attention because of the value of the contract and the number of people facing charges arising from its alleged awarding.
Matlala, who owns Medicare 24 Tshwane District, will now face the proceedings alongside the other accused rather than having his matter dealt with separately.
The case is expected back before the Pretoria Regional Court on 29 September 2026.
IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame confirmed the developments in the matter.
The prosecution is expected to continue pursuing the corruption charges against the accused as the case moves forward.
The allegations against Matlala, his companies and the other accused have yet to be tested in a full trial.
The NPA said its focus remains on ensuring accountability in corruption matters and pursuing those it alleges were involved in the unlawful awarding of public contracts.
For now, Matlala’s separate proceedings have been postponed, and he is expected to rejoin the 13 other accused when the main Medicare 24 Tshwane District case resumes on Tuesday.
