The Mbombela High Court has dismissed the bail appeal of Sifiso Vusimuzi Sibanyoni (39), who is accused of the premeditated murder of his wife, Dr Nondumiso Sibanyoni (34).

Sibanyoni approached the High Court after his initial bail application was denied by the Nelspruit Magistrates’ Court on 1 August 2025.

In its judgment delivered on Friday, the court cited the serious nature of the charge, its prevalence, and the significant public interest generated in the community where the incident occurred. The court found that releasing the accused on bail pending trial would likely disturb public order and undermine peace and security.

It further held that the nature and circumstances surrounding the alleged offence were likely to evoke shock and outrage within the community. The court concluded that granting bail would undermine public confidence in the criminal justice system and the proper administration of justice.

The matter stems from the fatal shooting of Dr Nondumiso Sibanyoni on 20 November 2024 outside a gym at a shopping centre in Nelspruit.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the dismissal of the appeal and reiterated its firm stance against gender-based violence and femicide.

Regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said the authority remains committed to ensuring accountability in cases involving violence against women.

“The NPA remains steadfast in ensuring that perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide are held accountable and face the full might of the law,” Nyuswa said.

She added that opposing bail in serious offences forms part of the NPA’s broader strategy to combat the scourge of GBV, which continues to affect communities across the country.

The accused remains in custody and is expected to stand trial in the High Court at a later date.
