The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) has confirmed that Leratong Village is geographically located within Ward 127 of the City of Johannesburg, putting to rest ongoing questions about which municipality the area falls under.
The confirmation was made during a meeting held at Leratong Hospital on Thursday involving the MDB, Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Jacob Mamabolo, Mogale City Executive Mayor Lucky Sele and City of Johannesburg Speaker Margaret Arnolds.
The meeting was convened to clarify the municipal jurisdiction and spatial location of Leratong Village following concerns and discussions over the demarcation of the area.
MDB chairperson Thabo Manyoni led the board’s participation in the engagement, which brought together representatives from the provincial government and the two municipalities.
During the meeting, the board confirmed that, from a geographical and spatial perspective, Leratong Village is situated within Ward 127 of the City of Johannesburg.
The MDB said its confirmation is based on its official spatial demarcation information, which determines the geographical location of municipalities and wards.
The clarification comes amid discussions about the municipal boundaries affecting Leratong Village, with residents and stakeholders seeking certainty over which local authority is responsible for the area.
The board said its mandate is to determine and maintain municipal boundaries in line with the applicable legislative framework.
It also provides authoritative information on municipal and ward demarcations.
The MDB stressed that the confirmation relates specifically to the spatial location of Leratong Village.
The board said it would continue engaging with relevant stakeholders to ensure that there is a common understanding of the applicable municipal boundaries and that accurate information is communicated to affected communities.
The meeting brought together officials from the provincial government, Mogale City and Johannesburg as the parties sought clarity on the demarcation issue.
