After much thought, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has concluded he is on the right track at the club.
The Portuguese has been at the helm since December last year, having taken over from Manqoba Mngqithi.
Sundowns went on to retain their league title with a 12-point difference over second-placed Orlando Pirates, and credit to Cardoso.
The big letdown was their defeat to Pyramids in the CAF Champions League final, and the jury is still out on whether Cardoso deserves a stay of execution.
He has his own view, and he is on the right track, he says.
“Time to close the season, a new one is approaching! Time to remember the experience, the achievements, the moments lived, and the ones that contributed to the ‘trip’ and say thank you,” Cardoso wrote on his official Instagram account.
“(Eight) months and so many accomplishments! South African Champion, Champions League finalist, (FIFA) Club World Cup participation with honour and pride for the results and level shown by the team, and (three) times Coach of the Month. The praises go to the administration and sports director that believed in me and to the players that accepted the guidance and leadership, developed trust, and gave their hearts and souls for the project.”
Cardoso added, “For our fans and supporters, a big thank you, demanding but warm, asking for more but staying present… time to have some rest and plan the future that will always continue to be on the level of what Mamelodi Sundowns is as a family! Strong, victorious, multiplicative.”
Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the departure of seven players. Cardoso hinted recently that he’s looking at a smaller squad.
Officially, Sundowns have now parted ways with Sanele Tshabalala, Thabang Sibanyoni, Sifiso Ngobeni, Lucas Suarez, Sipho Mbule, Lebohang Maboe, and Rivaldo Coetzee.
Mbule has since joined Orlando Pirates, while Suarez returns to his Argentinian club, CA Talleres, after failing to secure a permanent deal with the reigning PSL champions.
