Mozambique etched their name into African football history on Tuesday night by claiming their first-ever win at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), edging Gabon 3–2 in a pulsating encounter that will be remembered for years to come.

After 17 matches in the competition without tasting victory, the breakthrough finally arrived – but not without considerable suffering. Mozambique showed resilience, courage and attacking intent in a match that swung back and forth, keeping supporters on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.
The Mambas struck three times against a dangerous Gabonese side, but were repeatedly tested at the back. Gabon’s two goals piled pressure on Mozambique, forcing them to dig deep and defend with determination during the tense closing stages.

A central figure in the historic triumph was Geny Catamo, who was deservedly named Man of the Match. The dynamic midfielder drove Mozambique forward with pace and purpose, playing a key role in the attacking moves that unsettled Gabon’s defence and inspired his teammates. He scored the second goal from the penalty spot

Equally decisive was the outstanding performance of the Mozambican goalkeeper, whose series of spectacular saves proved crucial. Time and again, he denied Gabon with reflex stops that seemed almost “out of this world”, preserving the narrow lead when it mattered most.

As the final whistle sounded, scenes of jubilation erupted both on the pitch and back home. From Maputo to the farthest corners of the country, Mozambicans celebrated a milestone long awaited – a victory written, as many supporters described it, in golden letters in the nation’s football history books.

Beyond the three points, the win represents belief and possibility for Mozambique, signalling that the long wait is over and that the Mambas can now dream of going further on the continental stage.
