Mozambique is seeking greater investment and regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean, with a focus on the blue economy, maritime security, and infrastructure.
Speaking at the opening of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Japan on Wednesday, President Daniel Chapo said Mozambique was committed to initiatives that strengthen economic integration and peace in the region.
Highlighting the ocean’s role as both a trade route and a driver of socio-economic development, Chapo pointed to port logistics, the Nacala Corridor, renewable energy, sustainable tourism, and technological innovation as key areas for partnership.
“In line with our National Strategic Development Plan 2025–2040, we reiterate our willingness to welcome investments and regional initiatives aimed at reinforcing economic integration and peace in the Indian Ocean region,” said Chapo, according to a statement form the Presidents Office.
With 2,700 km of Indian Ocean coastline, Mozambique relies on the sea for more than 60% of its production. Chapo stressed that regional cooperation is vital for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and called for stronger youth exchange platforms between Africa and Japan.
“We are open to economic cooperation, with countless opportunities in Mozambique spanning services, infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, and fisheries, across Southern Africa, the Middle East–Africa, and Asia–Africa. This is why our National Strategy for the Development of the Blue Economy aims to unite economic prosperity with environmental justice,” he stated.
The Mozambican statesman said the Indian Ocean–Africa Economic Partnership Forum, held under TICAD9, was an opportunity to reshape strategies for collaboration with Japan and other partners while addressing global challenges.
Daniel Chapo described the Indian Ocean–Africa Economic Partnership Forum, held under the theme “Towards African Prosperity through Collaboration with Japan”, as an opportunity to reshape strategies for economic cooperation while tackling global challenges.
