Mozambique have written a new chapter in their football history by securing a historic place in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) — remarkably, before even playing their final group match.

The Mambas’ qualification was confirmed thanks to results elsewhere, most notably Angola’s 0–0 draw with Egypt in the final round of Group B. That stalemate effectively dashed Angola’s hopes of automatic progression and, in turn, opened the door for Mozambique to advance at least as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament.

Angola entered their decisive encounter knowing that only a victory over an already-qualified Egypt would keep their destiny in their own hands. However, the goalless draw left the Palancas Negras third in the group with just two points, behind Egypt and South Africa, both of whom progressed to the knockout stage.

Angola must now rely on a complex combination of results to reach the last 16 as one of the four best third-placed sides among the six groups. Their fate hinges on Group C outcomes, where they need Tanzania to lose to Tunisia and Uganda to fail to beat Nigeria.

Despite the pressure, Angola showed attacking intent in Agadir. Coach Pedro Gonçalves made seven changes to the starting eleven compared with the 1–1 draw against Zimbabwe, and his side displayed energy and initiative going forward. However, poor connections between midfield and attack and missed chances ultimately proved costly.

Egypt, playing with less urgency and also fielding a rotated side, controlled possession calmly, created few clear chances but managed the game intelligently. They capitalised on Angola’s anxiety, dictating the tempo and securing top spot in the group without unnecessary risk.

In the group’s other fixture, South Africa edged Zimbabwe 3–2 in a thrilling contest full of momentum swings. The result guaranteed Bafana Bafana a place in the knockout phase and confirmed Zimbabwe’s elimination.

Meanwhile, in Group A, tournament favourites Morocco underlined their credentials with a commanding 3–0 victory over Zambia in Rabat. That win ensured first place in the group for the Atlas Lions — and, crucially, mathematically confirmed Mozambique’s progression to the last 16.

For Mozambique, the significance of this moment cannot be overstated. Traditionally seen as underdogs on the continental stage, the Mambas have now guaranteed themselves a place among Africa’s top 16 teams, a milestone that reflects steady progress, resilience and growing belief within the squad.

Qualification without playing may feel unusual, but it does nothing to diminish the achievement. Instead, it offers Mozambique a psychological boost and valuable time to prepare for the knockout phase, where history has already been made — and where the dream may yet continue.
