The National Freedom Party (NFP), the kingmaker political party with one seat in the KwaZulu-Natal Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), says it sees nothing wrong with King Misuzulu’s call to remove “Natal” and leave the province as KwaZulu.
The party says Natal is a foreign name and that removing it would do no harm.
This was the comment by Zodwa Mtshali, the provincial secretary, in Durban today during a press conference to announce the weekend’s plans to celebrate the life and legacy of Zanele KaMagwaza-Msibi, the party’s founder.
“The King said Natal should be removed. By the way, who was Natal? I wonder what I would have been If I was not a Zulu person. I don’t belive that (Natal) is a Zulu. If the King says Natal should be removed, well, she (Natal) is not Zulu, why then should we chase foreign nationals when we will then continue to use other’s people’s surnames?
“That is true (that the name) should be changed, it’s a good idea, the King’s call should be heeded on this matter, thank you very much,” Mtshali said on the matter.
The King made the call to remove Natal last month during the battle of Isandlwana in Nquthu, and since then, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has backed the call, while the ANC has opposed it, and the DA has remained mum on the matter.
The call has also received the backing of the MK Party’s traditional and royalty wing led by Prince Mandlakapheli Zulu, who said the changing of the name of the province is long overdue.
