Nigeria’s aquaculture sector now produces around 500,000 tonnes of fish annually, making the country the largest fish producer in sub-Saharan Africa, according to a representative of an international organisation based in Nigeria.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), a media partner of TV BRICS, the organisation’s findings highlight the sector’s vast potential for growth, thanks to the nation’s abundant water resources – from rivers and lakes to its extensive coastline.

The report noted that innovative approaches such as multi-species aquaculture systems and advanced breeding methods could play a key role in boosting fish production, helping Nigeria reach self-sufficiency and strengthen its export capacity.

The international organisation noted that it is working to improve livelihoods and protect ecosystems across the country, directly impacting more than 11 million people in the areas of food security and sustainability. Through scientific and investment partnerships, it aims to drive lasting transformation in Nigeria’s fisheries and aquaculture industries.
