Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved significant improvements to the navigation and communication systems at national airports. The decision is aimed at improving flight safety and modernising the country’s entire aviation infrastructure, reports NAN, a partner of TV BRICS.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo announced this after an FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu. Key projects include the installation of an Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System in Lagos and Abuja to detect obstacles on the runway. New modular control towers for eight airports and a radio frequency monitoring system for communication reliability have also been approved.

“Approval was given for the installation of an aeronautical frequency spectrum monitor and interference detection solution to improve communication between ground controllers, tower personnel, and approaching or departing aircraft,” said Festus Keyamo.

In addition, President Tinubu approved the introduction of biometric electronic gates at all international airports to speed up passenger throughput and improve service quality.

The minister noted that these upgrades are a direct result of President Tinubu’s commitment to creating a safer and more efficient air transport system in the country.
