Orlando Pirates have shot down reports linking star player Relebohile Mofokeng to Dutch Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven.

In a swift response, the Buccaneers set the record straight after reports emerged on Wednesday claiming Mofokeng is on PSV’s radar and the European club is prepared to pay over R100 million to secure the services of the Sharpeville-born, Gauteng footballer.

“We wish to place it on record that no such offer has been received by the club,” stated Pirates.

“The claims made in the article are not only false but also irresponsible and damaging.”

Pirates then urged the media to report responsibly, as dictated by journalism ethics and standards.

“This type of reporting is not only misleading to the public but also serves as an unnecessary distraction aimed at unsettling both the player and the club at a critical juncture in our preparations for the upcoming season,” Pirates lamented.

“Orlando Pirates remains committed to the well-being of our players and will continue to act in their best interests. We call upon all media outlets to refrain from publishing unverified reports that seek to create instability for the sake of clicks.”

The 20-year-old Bafana Bafana winger is reportedly a subject of huge interest from overseas teams. More recently, he was linked to Israeli rival clubs Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Meanwhile, Mofokeng has been nominated for five Premier Soccer League (PSL) awards, more than any other player.

He is up for the main award; the PSL Footballer of the Season, as well as the Players’ Player of the Season accolade, which is voted for by his peers.

Mofokeng is also a nominee for the Betway Premiership Young Player of the Season, Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player, and the MTN8 Last Man Standing.
