The President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has laughed off the rumours that next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) could be postponed.
Motsepe has confirmed that AFCON 2027 will go ahead as planned in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
“We will announce the dates for the 2027 AFCON, but it will be played between June and July in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania,” said Motsepe.
Motsepe was speaking to the media on Friday following a CAF Executive Committee meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
“The last few days I’ve seen a lot of media speculation that there was an allegation that I’m here to tell Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda that I’m taking the AFCON (to other countries) because they are not ready. That is totally unfounded,” he said.
Earlier on Friday, reports had emerged claiming Kenya, a co-host of the 2027 AFCON, would accept a postponement over fears of election-related unrest.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has scheduled the next Kenyan general election for August 2027.
As per Pulse Sports, Kenya has experienced significant election-related violence in the past, particularly in 2007 and 2017. Recent years have also seen dozens killed during anti-government protests.
Motsepe, however, insisted that the AFCON would have concluded at that point, and there are no fears of disruptions.
