Orlando Pirates have on Monday night confirmed the departure of attacking midfielder Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi after reaching an agreement with Bahrain Premier League side Alkhaldiya Sports Club.
The 28-year-old playmaker leaves the Buccaneers after three seasons in the famous black-and-white jersey, having grown from an exciting newcomer into one of the club’s most recognisable and decorated midfielders.
The move to the Gulf in West Asia brings an end to a memorable chapter that began in June 2023, when Maswanganyi joined Pirates after a season with SuperSport United. The attacking midfielder quickly made his mark with his creativity, technical ability and eye for goal.
Pirates said Maswanganyi remained part of the technical team’s plans for the new season, but the player made it clear that he wanted to pursue a new challenge abroad. The club subsequently agreed to allow him to leave after discussions with the player and his representatives.
“Maswanganyi remained an important part of the technical team’s plans for the season. However, following discussions with the player and his representatives, he expressed a clear desire to pursue a new opportunity abroad,” Pirates said in a statement on Monday.
Maswanganyi’s impact at Pirates was particularly evident during the 2023/24 campaign, when he enjoyed a sensational individual season.
He was rewarded with three major PSL awards, the DStv Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, DStv Premiership Midfielder of the Season and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.
The recognition from his fellow professionals was arguably the biggest testament to his influence, with Maswanganyi voted the Players’ Player of the Season after helping Pirates enjoy another successful campaign.
During his time at the club, he was also part of Pirates teams that won major silverware, including the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup in 2023/24. Pirates successfully defended the MTN8 title during that campaign, with Maswanganyi among the players recognised for their contribution to the triumph.
He subsequently added another league championship medal to his collection during the 2025/26 season, leaving Pirates as a league champion.
Goals and assists
Maswanganyi’s numbers underline his contribution to the Buccaneers. According to Orlando Pirates’ official player profile, he leaves the club having made 119 appearances, scored 28 goals and provided 21 assists across competitions.
His league numbers also show his development over his three seasons at Pirates. In the 2023/24 Premiership campaign, Maswanganyi scored five goals and registered four assists. He followed that with three league goals in 2024/25 before producing his most prolific league campaign in 2025/26, scoring eight goals and providing two assists.
That final season was particularly significant as Pirates finished top of the Premiership, giving Maswanganyi a league title to add to his collection of domestic honours.
A favourite of the Ghost
Beyond the statistics and trophies, Maswanganyi became a popular figure among the Pirates faithful.
His flair, confidence on the ball and ability to produce decisive moments endeared him to the “Ghost”, while his personality and commitment helped establish a strong connection with supporters.
Pirates also described him as a player who understood the responsibility that came with representing one of Africa’s most historic football clubs.
“From his first appearance in the famous black and white jersey, he gave the Ghost countless moments to celebrate and represented this club with pride,” Pirates added.
The club’s appreciation for Maswanganyi’s contribution is perhaps best reflected by the honours he collected during his time in Soweto. His three individual PSL awards in 2024 placed him among the standout performers in South African football, while his team honours ensured that his Pirates chapter was decorated with silverware.
Now, a new adventure awaits in the Gulf.
For Maswanganyi, the move to Alkhaldiya represents an opportunity to test himself in a different football environment and continue his career abroad.
For Pirates, it marks the departure of a player who arrived with potential and leaves with a trophy cabinet, individual recognition and a special place in the hearts of the supporters.
