Mamelodi Sundowns have one hand on the Betway Premiership trophy after yet another win.

The Brazilians are living up to expectations, being on the verge of winning their eighth consecutive league title.

The reigning Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions beat Cape Town City 2-0 in the Western Cape on Saturday, with Tashreeq Matthews and Iqraam Rayners on the scoresheet.

Sundowns have garnered 61 points from 24 matches, and second-placed Orlando Pirates are on 49 points from 22 outings.

The Tshwane team has three matches remaining in their own backyard against Chippa United (7 May), Stellenbosch (11 May), and Magesi FC (17 May), before meeting Chippa again away (24 May).

However, the date against Chippa, for the last match, will have to change considering Sundowns will play Egyptian side Pyramids in the CAF Chanpions League final on 24 May and the return leg on 1 June.

“The boys are really fighting for what they want so much; we are really committed for every match, and now it’s (to) go for the next one and the next one and try to, well, try to get it,” commented Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso after the clash against Cape Town City.

“But we need to respect everybody because the next opponent will again be a very tough one.”

If Sundowns win all their remaining league games, they will equal their own record for the most points in a season, which is 73 (for a 30-match season).
