Police Chief Urges Support for Anti-Gang Unit After Attack in Westbury, Johannesburg

The National police commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, has condemned the attack on Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) officers in Westbury, Johannesburg and called on the community to support police efforts against crime.

This comes after AGU officers were attacked by residents while conducting an operation in the area on Tuesday afternoon. At around 3:50 p.m., officers were patrolling Steytler Street when they arrested a man found in possession of drugs. Shortly after the arrest, police said, some community members began throwing rocks and bottles at them.

Police say officers withdrew from the area without anyone being hurt and no vehicles being damaged. A warning shot was fired to ensure their safe exit.

In a media statement, Masemola expressed disappointment in the community’s actions.

“The community of Westbury have from time to time been complaining about the high levels of crime including drug dealing in the area,” he said. “We have deployed the anti-gang unit to deal decisively with this type of crime, but it seems as though when police take charge and enforce the law, communities turn on them and attack them.”

The Anti-Gang Unit is a specialised team within SAPS focused on fighting gang-related crimes such as drug trafficking and shootings. In Gauteng, they are active in areas including Eldorado Park, Westbury, Moffatview, and Sophiatown.

Masemola urged residents to cooperate with the police instead of interfering with operations.

“We cannot allow such a situation. We need the community to appreciate, support and work with the police and not attack them,” he said. “Our members will continue to discharge their duties without fear or favour.”

The Commissioner also praised the AGU for their work and encouraged them to continue fighting gang violence despite the incident.

The investigation into the attack on officers is ongoing, police added.
