The bail application of Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and his co-accused, Tobias Tamirepi Matonhodze, has been postponed to Thursday by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, with both men remaining in custody as delays continue in the high profile case.
The latest postponement follows a disrupted court session on Tuesday, where proceedings could not continue due to power cuts and outstanding documents required by the defence.
The two accused face a string of serious charges, including attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, two counts of pointing a firearm and contravention of immigration laws.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the delay will allow the State to provide key documents and give the defence time to prepare.
NPA Gauteng spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the postponement was necessary to ensure the case proceeds properly.
“The postponement is to allow the State to provide the defence with confirmatory documentary evidence from the Department of Home Affairs and to enable the defence to obtain further instructions from the accused,” Mohlatlole said.
The case stems from an alleged shooting at a residence in Hyde Park on 19 February 2026.
Mohlatlole said an altercation reportedly broke out inside the property before the situation escalated.
“It is alleged that during the altercation, the complainant was assaulted and attempted to flee the premises, but was shot in the back and collapsed outside the gate,” he said.
Further allegations detail actions taken after the shooting.
“It is further alleged that one of the accused took a remote control from the complainant, returned to the property and closed the gate,” Mohlatlole added.
A security guard from a neighbouring property alerted authorities after noticing the injured complainant outside, leading to the arrest of the two accused.
During Tuesday’s court appearance, defence lawyer Sinenhlanhla Mnguni told journalists that proceedings could not continue due to technical disruptions and incomplete disclosure.
“There was a technical failure with electricity, we weren’t able to proceed,” Mnguni said.
He confirmed that the defence is still waiting for documentation from the prosecution before moving ahead with the bail application.
“There are some documents that the prosecution needs to provide us before we proceed with the bail application on our clients’ behalf,” he said.
Mnguni said the defence requires time to study the material and consult with the accused before taking further steps.
“We still need to consult our clients as we do not have a full set of facts before we take instructions,” he said.
He added that the legal team is ready to proceed once the outstanding issues are resolved.
“We have been ready since last week Monday. The prosecution indicated on record that they experienced challenges in obtaining certain documents,” Mnguni said.
The accused, including Mugabe, who is the son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, remain behind bars until their next court appearance.
The matter has drawn attention due to the seriousness of the charges and the profile of the accused.
There are unconfirmed allegations that Mugabe is in the country illegally, which is yet to be confirmed by authorities.
The case is expected to resume on Thursday, 05 March 2026, when the court will hear the bail application, subject to the availability of the outstanding documents and completion of consultations between the defence and their clients.
