A 47-year-old Boschkop man accused of deliberately infecting his girlfriend with HIV has been granted R2,000 bail by the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court.

The man faces a charge of attempted murder after allegedly concealing his HIV-positive status from his 38-year-old partner and telling her that he was HIV negative during their relationship.

According to a statement issued by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Gauteng Division regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana on Friday, the couple started dating in October 2025 and remained in a relationship until June 2026.

The allegations surfaced on 26 June when the woman allegedly discovered antiretroviral (ARV) medication in the accused’s bag.

She confronted him about the medication and, according to the allegations before court, he admitted that he was HIV positive.

The accused allegedly went further by telling the woman that he had intentionally infected her because he did not want her to enter into a relationship with another man.

On 25 July, the woman underwent an HIV test at a medical facility and was informed that she had tested positive.

She reported the matter to the police the following day, leading to the accused’s arrest at their place of residence.

During the bail proceedings, the State did not oppose the accused’s release. The prosecution indicated that he was not considered a flight risk.

The court subsequently found that it was in the interests of justice to release him on bail of R2,000.

The matter has been postponed to 27 August 2026 for the determination of a regional court date.

The allegations against the accused are yet to be tested in a full trial.

The case has raised serious questions about disclosure, trust and alleged deception in intimate relationships, while the attempted-murder charge will now proceed through the criminal justice system.
