Egyptian side Pyramids has won the CAF Champions League for the first time in its history.

Pyramids got the better of Mamelodi Sundowns, winning 2-1 on Sunday at the 30 June Stadium in Egypt’s capital, Cairo.

The hosts win the tie 3-2 on aggregate after the 1-1 draw in the first leg played in Pretoria about a week ago.

Fiston Mayele’s first-half strike and one from Mohamed Chibi in the second stanza ensured a win for Pyramids, who were playing in their first final. The club was founded in 2008 as Al Assiouty Sport and changed its name to Pyramids just seven years ago.

A lot was expected from Sundowns, but they were undone by poor defending, specifically for Mayele’s goal after a poor clearance by Grant Kekana. The DR Congo international pounced on the loose ball inside the box to fire past Ronwen Williams in the 23rd minute.

Before the hour mark, an unmarked Ahmed Samy added a second for Pyramids with a header from a free kick, and from there, it was a mountain to climb for the Tshwane side.

Iqraam Rayners did pull one back for the Brazilians, but Pyramids held firm for the rest of the match to win their maiden title.

Pyramids will be smiling all the way to the bank to cash in the first prize of $4 million (R72 million).

The runners-up, Sundowns, settle for $2 million (R36 million).
