Mozambican international Reinildo Mandava says his dream was to play in the Premier League as he officially signed a two-year contract with English side Sunderland, marking a historic milestone as he becomes the first Mozambican player to feature in the world’s most competitive League.
Mandava, a left-back who has also played as a centre-back for Mozambique’s national team, was unveiled by Sunderland on Tuesday, following the club’s promotion to the English top flight.
In his first interview wearing the club’s colours, an emotional Mandava described the move as the realisation of a lifelong dream.
“For me, this is a dream come true. It has always been my ambition to play in the Premier League – the biggest league in Europe. Sunderland is a massive club, and I am thrilled to be here,” said the 30-year-old.
He revealed that the dream of playing in England began during his childhood in Mozambique.
“Back home, football was part of our daily lives. When I arrived in Europe, I always said that my dream was to play in the Premier League. Sunderland has given me that chance, and I intend to make the most of it.”
Mandava said he was “excited and eager” to join his new teammates and contribute to the club’s ambitions.
“This is another opportunity for me to show what I can do, to make history. The Premier League is a different level, with a different style of football. I’m ready to work hard, to fight, and give everything for the club.”
Though it’s his first time at an English club, Mandava expressed deep admiration for the Premier League, saying he had long followed the competition.
“I love the Premier League – it’s fast, intense, and challenging. I’m ready to embrace it fully.”
Speaking to Sunderland supporters, he made a bold promise:
“I’m someone who gives 120% every single day. I leave everything on the pitch – for the club, for my teammates.”
Mandava also outlined his short-term goals:
“First and foremost, I want to help the team achieve its objectives, enjoy my football, and win games. I’m here to grow, to learn, and to win.”
The defender brings significant European experience, having played for six clubs before this move: Benfica B, Fafe, Sporting Covilhã, B SAD, Lille, and Atlético Madrid. Across these clubs, he has amassed 257 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing three assists.
His signing represents a landmark moment not just for his career but for Mozambican football, as he becomes a trailblazer for future generations aiming to reach the highest levels of the game.
