“So, yeah, it was just one of those unfortunate situations. But we learn from it, and we keep going.”

With the above words, Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has looked past his horrendous error against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Sundowns lost 3-4 to the Germans in a FIFA Club World Cup match played in Cincinnati, United States (US).

At the time of the incident, Sundowns were 1-0 up after Lucas Ribeiro Costa scored early in the match, and while Sundowns were in dreamland—sensing an upset—Dortmund took advantage of Williams’ misplaced pass to draw level before scoring three more to edge Sundowns in the end.

“It’s not nice to concede a goal like that, but we are a team that takes risks, and before I received the ball, I saw Tebza [Teboho Mokoena] there, but he got a call from Marcelo [Allende] to move away,” Williams reflected.

“So, yeah, it was just one of those unfortunate situations. But we learn from it, and we keep going. All of their goals were mistakes, errors from us, and at this level, you get punished. Where we come from, you get away with it, and these are good lessons. We shouldn’t be disappointed,” he added.

“That’s our style. We are always going to try to play it from the back; it was just unfortunate it didn’t go our way this time.”

Sundowns moved down to third in Group F after Brazilian side Fluminense beat Ulsan from Korea 4-2 in the later match.

The South African champions will then have to dig deep to get a good result against Fluminense in their last group match in Florida on Wednesday, 25 June, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake.

Dortmund will take on Ulsan on the same day.
