The new CAF Confederation Cup trophy now belongs to Moroccan club RS Berkane.

Berkane played to a 1-1 draw with Tanzanian side Simba in Zanzibar on Sunday but won the tie 3-1 on aggregate after winning two-nil in the first leg.

Moine Chaabani’s men pocket $2,000,000 (R35.6 million) for the first prize, and Simba settles for $1,000,000 (R17.8 million) as a runner-up.

Fadlu Davids’s charges, Simba, played their part, but it wasn’t enough.

The first-half goal from Joshua Mutale gave offered hope, but they suffered a setback early in the second half when Yussuph Kagoma was sent off for an early shower.

Simba then had a goal chalked off after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, with Steven Mukwala adjudged to have come from an offside position, and when Berkane scored in injury time, it was over for Simba.

It’s the second time Davids has lost a Confederation Cup final to Berkane, going back to the days when he was at Orlando Pirates, who lost on penalties to Berkane in 2022.

Berkane are one of the dominant teams in this competition and, on paper, were the favourites, and to their credit, they lived up to expectations.

Next season, Berkane will be in the Champions League after winning the Moroccan league title, while Simba is also guaranteed a place in the elite competition as one of the two top teams from their country.
