Wydad Casablanca coach Rulani Mokwena has responded to questions about whether he could be leaving the club earlier than expected.
Mokwena was speaking to the media following Wydad’s 1-1 draw with Olympique de Safi on Wednesday, which leaves Wydad in third place and six points behind FAR Rabat with three matches to go.
Wydad was hoping to salvage its season by finishing second and qualifying for next season’s CAF Champions League, but it’s more likely they’d settle for a place in the CAF Confederation Cup.
And the Wydad supporters are up in arms, demanding Mokwena’s exit, after six consecutive league draws.
“It’s up to the president (Hicham Ait Menna). I’ve already said that at the end (of the season), I leave… that’s the situation. I love Wydad. I’ll only coach Wydad in Morocco, only. If you say Dima Wydad, you say Dima Wydad forever,” said Mokwena, who’s on a three-year contract.
Wydad was in a rebuilding phase after finishing sixth last season, and with about 20 new signings to kick off Mokwena’s tenure, the South African mentor has found the going tough in North Africa. African Times reported recently that he announced a social media hiatus with Wydad supporters crowding his personal space.
“It’s just to thank the president; he’s been amazing,” Mokwena continued.
“I think Wydad has the best president in Morocco, maybe in Africa. The players have given me everything of the best, the staff has been good, but Wydad is a big club, you know; they deserve to win, and maybe Wydad deserves a better coach than me,” he said.
Mokwena’s parting shot was a few words to the club’s multitude of supporters, who have clearly turned their backs on him.
“Of course, they have every right to be emotional. They love their club, and you can feel it. In other places, for a big club to be number three on the table is a good season, but with Wydad, to be number three is not a good season. But also, if you take into account where the club was last season, number six, and now number three, you know, we are there.
“The club will come back and will rise again,” Mokwena concluded.
