Mohau Nkota will certainly be missed at Orlando Pirates for his contribution on and off the field.
Leading up to a match, he would be at the forefront, singing his lungs out, encouraging the team. He is just 20 years old but was never left behind.
On the pitch, his first season with Bucs’ first team produced seven goals and five assists in 39 appearances. The Pirates supporters were no doubt looking forward to seeing how he’d fare in his second season.
Then came the news that he had been transferred to Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq, and the reaction was mixed emotions. While there’s a feeling it’s a good move for the youngster and makes financial sense for the club, it’s too soon for some to see him go.
But he is excited to go test himself against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo (Al Nassr), Theo Hernandez (Al Hilal), Joao Cancelo (Al Hilal), Fabinho (Al Ittihad), Franck Kessie (Al Ahli), Riyadh Mahrez (Al Ahli), Kalidou Koulibaly (Al Hilal), and Karim Benzema (Al Ittihad).
“I’m filled with mixed emotions. There’s sadness in leaving behind the only football home I’ve ever known, but also excitement for the journey ahead. I’ve grown as a player, but even more importantly, I’ve grown as a person. I’m proud and honoured to have won my first major cup with Orlando Pirates. The memories we’ve created and the friendships formed here will last a lifetime,” said Nkota, who has signed a three-year deal with Al Ettifaq.
“As I close this chapter of my life, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to Coach Mandla Qhogi (development coach) and Mxolisi Mngomezulu (talent scout). Thank you for giving me the opportunity to fulfill my dream. You believed in me and gave me the platform to grow.
“To coach Joseph Makhanya, you’ve been more than just a coach—you’ve been a true father figure. Your guidance has shaped me not only as a player but as a man, and to the man who made me the person I am today—Coach José Riveiro—thank you. Your influence on my journey has been immeasurable, and I will carry your lessons with me wherever I go,” get said.
“To the fans, thank you for your unwavering support. Your cheers, your chants, your passion, and even your constructive criticism—all of it fueled me every single step of the way. I’ll never forget the electric atmosphere you created on match days. It was a privilege to play for you.
“To the chairman, the staff, the technical team, and all the players, past and present, thank you. Your dedication, hard work, and contributions have left a lasting impact on me.
“As I begin this new chapter, I do so with the values, lessons, and memories I’ve gained from this incredible club. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to wear the black and white and be part of the rich history of the Mighty Buccaneers. Thank you for the unforgettable time.”
