Kgothatso Montjane and Yui Kamiji won their second French Open Women’s Wheelchair Doubles title in Paris late Friday.
South Africa’s tennis star Montjane and her Japanese partner, Kamiji, staged a fight back in the final, after losing the first set, to defeat the number two seeds, Chinese duo Xiaohui Li/Ziying Wang, 4-6, 7-5, [10-7], claiming their second Roland Garros title together, with the first coming in 2023.
Montjane and Kamiji will share the prize money of €21,650 [R438,000], as prize money for doubles is per team.
For Montjane, who turned 39 on 3 June, this marks a third Grand Slam doubles crown [Roland Garros 2023, 2025, and US Open 2023].
Montjane, meanwhile, will also pick up a cheque of €20,600 [416,000] for reaching the semi-finals in the singles event.
She crashed out in the last four, going down to Dutch second seed Aniek van Koot, who beat Montjane 6-4, 6-4 to move into her fourth women’s wheelchair final at Roland Garros.
