The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has officially announced that the 2025 Tax Filing Season will run from 7 July to 20 October 2025 for non-provisional taxpayers.

This announcement was made in a media statement released by SARS on Monday, June 2.

The revenue collector confirmed that a large number of taxpayers will be automatically assessed this year. “From 7 to 20 July 2025, we will notify qualifying taxpayers via SMS and email about their auto assessments,” SARS said.

Taxpayers who receive an auto-assessment do not need to file a return if they agree with the results. According to SARS, “If a taxpayer is satisfied with the auto assessment, they don’t have to do anything further and the process terminates at this point.”

However, if there is missing or incorrect information, taxpayers must submit their corrections via eFiling or the SARS MobiApp by 20 October 2025. “If the taxpayer is of the opinion that SARS has not captured all the necessary information, they are free to make changes,” SARS explained.

Taxpayers who do not receive an auto-assessment must start filing their tax returns from 21 July 2025. SARS reminded this group to file timeously and accurately to avoid penalties.

Provisional taxpayers and trusts will have until 19 January 2026 to complete their filings.

SARS highlighted the importance of up-to-date banking and contact details. “There is no need to do anything if your banking details and security contact details have not changed,” the revenue collector noted. For those expecting a refund, SARS said, “If all their information is correct, they will receive it in 72 hours.”

This year, SARS has enhanced support services, including extended customer service hours, updated digital platforms, and improved online help tools. “We urge all taxpayers to prepare their documentation early to check their assessments and to avoid last-minute delays,” SARS added.

SARS is encouraging all users to avoid visiting branches unless absolutely necessary. Instead, they must use the revenue collector’s digital channels, such as e-Filing and SARS MobiApp or book an appointment if it is unavoidable.
