Saudi Arabia is actively fighting to preserve mangrove forests, which are an important element of environmental protection. Covering only 0.5 per cent of the world’s coastal areas, mangroves play a key role in combating climate change, purifying water, and protecting the coast from erosion.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture and the National Centre for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification are implementing programmes to protect and restore mangroves. They are planting mangrove trees along the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf coastlines and conducting research to restore these forests in harsh conditions. This is reported by Arab News.
