Riyadh, 20 July 2025 — Prince Al Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, widely known as the “Sleeping Prince” of Saudi Arabia, has died after spending more than 20 years in a coma caused by a tragic road accident in London. He was 35.

The prince passed away on Saturday, 19 July, at a medical facility in Saudi Arabia, according to a statement issued by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud.

“With hearts believing in Allah’s will and decree, and with deep sorrow and sadness, we mourn our beloved son: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him,” Prince Khaled wrote in Arabic on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Born in April 1990, Prince Al Waleed was the eldest son of Prince Khaled bin Talal, a prominent figure in the Saudi royal family and nephew to billionaire businessman Prince Al Waleed bin Talal.

His life took a tragic turn in 2005 when, at just 15 years old and studying as a military cadet in London, he was involved in a serious car accident that left him with severe brain injuries and internal bleeding. Despite immediate medical intervention, including treatments by American and Spanish specialists, the prince remained in a minimally conscious state for more than two decades.

Throughout the years, Prince Khaled remained by his son’s side, refusing to withdraw life support. He often shared footage of the prince showing slight physical responses, such as finger movements, especially during the recitation of the Quran. These videos regularly captured the public’s attention, becoming symbols of hope and a father’s unwavering devotion.

Prince Al Waleed’s hospital room was frequently decorated to mark significant occasions — from Ramadan and Eid to Saudi National Day — and many of the videos shared by his father went viral on social media. Over time, thousands visited the prince’s bedside to pray with the family and pay their respects.

News of the prince’s passing has sparked a wave of condolences online, with the hashtag “#SleepingPrince” trending widely.

“May Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled rest in peace. Deepest sympathies to his loved ones,” one user wrote. Another post read, “Your time on earth was a blessing to your family and the world in general.” Others praised the family’s steadfast faith and devotion.

Funeral prayers are scheduled to be held today, Sunday 20 July, at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.

Prince Al Waleed’s story, marked by tragedy and hope, captured the hearts of millions across the Arab world and beyond. His passing brings to a close a long chapter of pain and perseverance for his family, who stood by him every day for over two decades.
