South Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity following Israel’s recent announcement recognising Somaliland as an independent state, warning that the move poses a serious threat to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

In a statement issued on Monday, 29 December 2025, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said South Africa viewed Israel’s decision with deep concern, describing it as a violation of the Federal Republic of Somalia’s sovereignty. The department said the recognition undermines international law and risks destabilising an already fragile region.

South Africa said it remains firmly aligned with the African Union’s long-standing principle of uti possidetis, which upholds the sanctity of inherited colonial borders as a safeguard against conflict on the continent. The government emphasised the distinction between decolonisation, which restores sovereignty, and secession, which it said fragments states and fuels instability.

“Israel’s action validates fragmentation and risks a domino effect of instability,” said Ministry spokesperson Chrispin Phiri. He added that South Africa is urging the international community to reject what it views as external interference and to support efforts aimed at maintaining a united and stable Somalia.

The Economic Freedom Fighters has also weighed in, strongly condemning Israel’s recognition of Somaliland. In a statement, the party described the move as a deliberate attempt to destabilise Somalia and expand Israeli influence in strategically important parts of Africa and the Middle East. The EFF claimed the recognition forms part of broader geopolitical manoeuvres linked to Israel’s actions in Palestine and its international standing.

The party further alleged that the recognition of Somaliland could provide Israel with political and economic leverage in the Horn of Africa, while contributing to heightened regional tensions. The EFF also linked the move to what it described as coordinated efforts by Israel and the United States to undermine international institutions, particularly when they are led by African states that support Palestinian self-determination.

According to the EFF, Somalia’s role within multilateral institutions, including its anticipated leadership position at the United Nations Security Council in 2026, has made it a target of disinformation and diplomatic pressure. The party also referenced recent US airstrikes in Nigeria, alleging they followed misleading claims and resulted in civilian casualties.

EFF spokesperson Sinawo Thambo said the developments signal growing intolerance towards countries that openly support Palestine, warning that such actions threaten global stability and weaken international institutions.

South Africa has not commented on the EFF’s broader claims but reiterated its call for respect for international law, African unity and peaceful resolution of disputes.
