
Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have secured their CAF Champions League spots for next season.
Sundowns need just one point to win the Betway Premiership, while Pirates, in second place, cannot be overtaken by any other team.
The top two from South Africa’s top flight are guaranteed spots in the Champions League.
Pirates are one-time winners of this competition, which was in 1995, and Sundowns brought the trophy home in 2016. The Tshwane team is also in this year’s final against Egyptian side Pyramids.
By virtue of being Nedbank Cup champions, Kaizer Chiefs will campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Amakhosi previously won this competition in 2001, when it was called the African Cup Winners’ Cup.
In 2004, CAF merged the African Cup Winners’ Cup, created in 1975, with the CAF Cup, introduced in 1992, to form a new competition called the Confederation Cup.
Chiefs will be joined by either Sekhukhune United or Stellenbosch FC, who are fighting it out for third place in the Betway Premiership, which guarantees qualification for the Confederation Cup.
From North Africa, Egyptian sides Al Ahly and Pyramids will again represent their country in the Champions League, with Zamalek returning to the Confederation Cup.
Tunisian club Espérance has also confirmed its place in the Champions League, alongside Berkane and FAR Rabat, both from Morocco.
Nigerian outfit Remo Stars are champions in their country and will campaign in Africa’s premium club competition.
Most Leagues in the continent are set to conclude their season and African Times will soon update the final lists of the teams to campaign in next season’s CAF club competitions.
