Stadium Management Under the Spotlight as Soweto Derby Sells Out

The Soweto Derby has been sold out for the umpteenth time.

Kaizer Chiefs will host nemesis Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on 3 May in a league fixture.

“The Soweto Derby scheduled for the 03rd of May 2025 at FNB Stadium is now SOLD OUT!!!!,” announced Kaizer Chiefs on Thursday evening.

FNB Stadium has a capacity of approximately 94,000, but usually sells around 87,000 tickets for safety reasons.

Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA), which manages FNB Stadium, will be under the spotlight after 110,000 fans—thousands allegedly in possession of fake tickets—found their way into the venue during the previous Soweto Derby on 1 February.

In response, Stadium Management announced a new ticketing vendor, Open Ticket, to ensure there’s no repeat of what happened in February.

“We identified mainly two issues that contributed towards the problems we’ve had. One was fraudulent tickets. The second point was scanning issues at the entry points,” admitted Stadium Management South Africa CEO Bertie Grobbelaar two months ago.

“There was the issue of human error on the part of scanning staff and security personnel, and in some instances, these people were working together, taking bribes to let people in.”

SMSA has given assurances that these issues have been resolved.

In the league, Amakhosi, in eighth place, are battling for a top eight spot, while the Buccaneers, who occupy second spot, have their sights firmly on league honours.

Meanwhile, after the battle at FNB Stadium, the two sides will then meet in the Nedbank Cup final scheduled for 10 May at Moses Mabhida Stadium, a 56,000-seat venue.

However, tickets for this match are yet to go on sale.
