Mamelodi Sundowns are off to a good start at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States (US).
The Brazilians surged to the top of Group F after a first-half strike from Iqraam Rayners secured a deserved 1-0 victory over Korean side Ulsan HD at the Inter & Co Stadium in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday morning.
Sundowns held 67.8% possession in the match. Only Paris Saint-Germain (73.9%), FC Bayern Munich (70.4%), and Flamengo (68.5%) have held more so far at the tournament.
In the earlier Group F encounter, Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund played to a goalless draw.
For their efforts, Sundowns will be rewarded with $2 million (R36 million) for the win.
In the group stage, teams receive $2 million for a win and $1 million (R18 million) for a draw.
Sundowns are also guaranteed a participation fee of $9.55 million (R170 million in today’s exchange rate), meaning they have accumulated R206 million thus far, with the potential to make much more depending on how far they go in the tournament.
Sundowns’s next match will be a big test against German side Borussia Dortmund in Cincinnati on Saturday, 21 June, with kickoff set for 6 PM South African time.
Meanwhile, Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca will take on Manchester City later today (Wednesday evening).
