Mamelodi Sundowns have ended Orlando Pirates’ four-year dominance of the MTN8 Cup, defeating the defending champions 2-0 in a thrilling final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday night.

The Brazilians brought Pirates’ hopes of winning an unprecedented fifth consecutive MTN8 title to a painful end, with Teboho Mokoena and Iqraam Rayners delivering the decisive blows in a contest that had everything from early goals to penalty drama.

For Sundowns, the victory ended a wait for MTN8 glory dating back to 2021 and handed head coach Miguel Cardoso his first domestic cup title with the Tshwane giants.

Mokoena fires the first warning

Pirates arrived in Durban determined to extend their reign, and the Buccaneers made their intentions clear by starting aggressively, pushing forward in search of an early breakthrough.

However, their promising start failed to produce a goal, and Sundowns needed only one opportunity to remind their rivals that the trophy was not going to be surrendered without a fight.

Mokoena opened the scoring in the 11th minute, finishing from close range after Thabang Matuludi helped create the opportunity during a scramble inside the Pirates penalty area.

The goal shifted the pressure onto the defending champions, who suddenly found themselves chasing a final they had hoped to dominate.

Sundowns looked dangerous going forward and created further opportunities, but Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine kept his side in contention with important saves, denying Brayan León and Nuno Santos as the Brazilians searched for a second goal.

Williams becomes the difference

Pirates refused to surrender their crown without a fight and continued searching for an equaliser after the break.

Their biggest opportunity arrived in the 62nd minute when the Buccaneers were awarded a penalty, handing Gamphani Lungu the chance to bring the contest level.

But Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams had other plans.

The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper produced a crucial save, pushing Lungu’s spot-kick onto the post and away from danger to preserve Sundowns’ slender advantage.

It was a defining moment in the final. Had Pirates converted, the momentum could have swung dramatically in their favour.

Instead, Williams’ intervention kept the Brazilians in control of a match that was becoming increasingly tense as the clock ticked down.

Pirates continued pushing for a breakthrough, but Sundowns’ defence held firm under pressure.

Rayners delivers the final blow

Just when Pirates were hoping for one last opportunity to rescue their title defence, Sundowns struck again.

Deep into stoppage time, the Brazilians were awarded a penalty after a foul inside the box, giving substitute Iqraam Rayners the chance to put the result beyond doubt.

Rayners made no mistake, calmly sending the ball into the bottom-left corner in the 90th-plus-fourth minute to seal a 2-0 victory.

The goal ended any lingering hopes of a Pirates comeback and confirmed Sundowns as the new MTN8 champions.
