Russia’s energy system is one of the largest in the world, with generation facilities having a total installed capacity of almost 270 GW. This was stated by President Vladimir Putin during the plenary session of the Russian Energy Week.

The head of state also emphasised that Russia’s energy balance is among the greenest in the world, as 87 per cent of the country’s electricity is produced with minimal or zero carbon emissions through gas and nuclear generation. He specified that over the next 15 years, 29 GW of nuclear power capacity is planned to be commissioned.

According to him, Russian companies are actively developing green energy projects not only within the country but also abroad: with the participation of Russian specialists, more than 400 hydropower initiatives have already been implemented in 55 countries worldwide.

“We intend to deepen cooperation in the nuclear sector with the countries of the Global South through BRICS. We are already working very actively in this area” – Vladimir Putin, President of Russia.

He added that by implementing major international projects, Russia helps its partners strengthen their scientific and technological potential.

The President also spoke about the achievements in the oil and gas sector. He said that by the end of the current year, Russia would produce 510 million tonnes of oil and that the country now accounts for around 10 per cent of global production. In addition, Russia possesses unique gas reserves, Putin noted.

“Russia intends to strengthen its position as a global energy leader, developing partnerships to build a fair and sustainable model of global energy for the benefit of future generations,” the Russian leader stated.

The Russian Energy Week is taking place in Moscow under the motto “Creating the Energy of the Future Together”. The forum brings together representatives from 85 countries – leaders of energy companies, public officials, experts and scholars. During more than 60 events, participants are discussing the development of the fuel and energy sector and the strengthening of international partnerships in a multipolar world.

Earlier, Nelli Semenova, research fellow of the Oriental Studies Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and candidate of political sciences, told TV BRICS in an exclusive commentary that BRICS countries – particularly Russia, China, India, and Brazil – are not only interested in traditional energy sources but are also actively developing low-carbon energy, including solar, wind, bioenergy, and hydrogen technologies.
