Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) president Walace Karia retained his seat on Saturday for another four-year term.

Karia has been TFF president since 2017, having taken over from Jamal Malinzi.

He was re-elected in 2021, which was meant to be his last term in office, but the two-term limit was amended, and he’s now in his third term.

According to Tanzanian media, the constitutional term limits were designed to stop what was recognized as “the cult of personality”—having a powerful TFF president who would capitalize on the semblance of incumbency to cling to power indefinitely.

Under Karia’s leadership, however, Tanzania twice qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2019 and 2021, advanced youth/women’s teams, and secured regional influence.

He also serves as president of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) and he was elected to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive committee in March this year.

His re-election as TFF president extends his tenure to 2029.
