Tertiary institution Wits University has recognised one of the icons of South African football, Dr. Kaizer Motaung.
The 80-year-old, who was joined by his family at Wits’ Great Hall on Tuesday, was conferred with an honorary doctorate in commerce.
“This was a special day for me and, obviously, Kaizer Chiefs as well. This has been a very interesting journey we undertook in 1970,” said Motaung while speaking to the media.
“I’m happy I was able to accept this honour. It’s a great honour that has been bestowed upon me by the university. It’s an honour I think will be celebrated in my family.
“Some members of the family have gone through this institution; my grandchildren and children have gone through the university. I’m very happy and proud to be part of this community.”
Meanwhile, Wits has heaped praise on Motaung for his contributions to the community at large.
“Kaizer Motaung is an excellent footballer, a successful businessperson and soccer administrator, a philanthropist, and a proud political activist. He has contributed to the betterment of South Africa, the development of soccer in the country, and the uplifting of disadvantaged youth, amongst his many other talents.”
Motaung formed Kaizer Chiefs in 1970, and today, the club is regarded as the most successful in the country, with 93 titles and the backing of about 14 million supporters.
This is not the first time Dr. Motaung has been honoured by a tertiary institution.
In July 2022, he was recognised by the University of Cape Town with the title Doctor of Social Science Honoris Causa for his contribution to football and social development in South Africa.
