In a shock move, Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca has inquired about the possibility of securing Cristiano Ronaldo’s services ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup next month.
According to renowned Spanish publication Marca, Wydad have entered the race for his signature, even just for the tournament.
The legendary forward is on the tail end of his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, and his future is uncertain.
Ronaldo’s contract with Al-Nassr runs until 30 June 2025, and with the Club World Cup set to get underway on 14 June, the opportunity to play in the tournament could be enticing for the Portuguese international.
“We reported on calls from Brazil last Sunday; now we have to add the interest of Moroccan team Wydad, who will be one of the 32 participants in the FIFA World Cup, starting June 14,” reported Marca, which has seemingly caught the world of football by surprise.
“The leaders of one of the four African teams participating in the World Cup are hoping to have the Portuguese player for the tournament, seeking the sporting and social incentive that CR7’s presence would bring, competing against the best in the world.”
Wydad are in Group G alongside Ronaldo’s former team Juventus, as well as Manchester City and Al-Ain.
Al-Nassr, meanwhile, remains in contention for the Saudi championship with two matches remaining, until 26 May.
Negotiations reportedly continue between Al-Nassr and Ronaldo’s representatives to extend their contract to June 2026, but those in the know claim Ronaldo would welcome the opportunity to feature in the Club World Cup.
