The Chinese leader called on Beijing and New Delhi to capitalise on each other’s strengths and work together on development within BRICS
China and India should approach the development of bilateral relations from a strategic perspective and take into account the long-term interests of both countries. Chinese President Xi Jinping made these remarks during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, reports ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.
According to Xi Jinping, despite the differences between the two countries, China and India are capable of supporting one another and achieving joint development.
“Although the two countries are different, we have been able to support and help each other to achieve common development. China and India are the world’s most populous countries and belong to the Global South. We have important responsibilities, as we have a shared future for humanity. We should continue to promote high-quality cooperation with the people as the foundation and strive for a more equitable and inclusive world that is more open and economically integrated, contributing positive energy to world peace, stability, and development,” the Chinese President noted.
Xi Jinping noted that this was his second visit to New Delhi in 12 years. During this time, he and Modi have met more than 20 times and reached a number of important agreements.
For his part, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked China for its support and cooperation during India’s BRICS Chairship. Modi noted that the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the further development of bilateral cooperation.
“It gives me great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you. Thank you very much for your positive remarks at the BRICS Summit. I express my gratitude for the support and cooperation received from China during India’s BRICS Chairship,” said Prime Minister Modi.
At the summit, India presented initiatives to reform global governance. Modi proposed that the group’s members draw up a roadmap for reforming the group and called for the role of Global South countries in shaping international rules to be strengthened.
China will assume the BRICS Chairship next year and host the group’s 19th summit. “The Chinese side will seize the opportunity to build consensus and work with all parties to plan for the future. Together, we will usher in the third golden decade of BRICS cooperation,” said Xi Jinping.
The BRICS leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration following the 18th BRICS Summit, which is taking place on 12–13 September in the Indian capital. The document sets out key areas of cooperation in sustainable development, innovation, the economy, healthcare, energy, and engagement with countries of the Global South.
