Lusaka, Zambia – June 6, 2025 — The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has cancelled two international friendly matches against Sudan and Tunisia, scheduled between June 8-12, 2025, in Morocco, following a boycott by some national team players over unpaid allowances.

FAZ President Keith Mweemba announced the cancellations during a press conference at Football House in Lusaka, where he candidly addressed the association’s financial struggles. “The coffers are dry, that’s a fact. FAZ is facing significant debts, including outstanding payments for hotels, player allowances, affiliation fees, salaries, and legal costs,” Mweemba stated.

The players’ refusal to travel underscores long-standing tensions over unpaid bonuses and allowances, a persistent issue plaguing Zambian football.

Mweemba condemned the boycott, calling it “unpatriotic” and an “act of betrayal to the badge.” He warned players against such actions, saying “it amounts to nothing short of an attempt to embarrass the nation”.

Mweemba pledged to resolve the financial issues but provided no timeline for settling the outstanding payments. The cancellations mark a setback for Zambia’s preparations for upcoming international competitions, raising concerns about team morale and FAZ’s ability to manage its obligations.
