Zimbabwe’s airports experienced a significant 19 per cent rise in passenger traffic last year, attributed to the government’s efforts to upgrade and modernise its ports of entry. According to data released by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ), passenger numbers climbed to over two million in 2023, up from approximately 1.9 million the previous year. The report highlights a positive trajectory for the country’s aviation sector.
In addition to passenger growth, cargo volumes also saw an uptick, surpassing 17 tonnes, up from around 15 tonnes in 2023, with the last quarter recording particularly strong performance. The expansion was further fuelled by the arrival of new airlines, additional routes, and increased flight frequencies at both international and domestic airports, as reported by ZBC News, a partner of TV BRICS.
Nyasha Kaseke, a business studies lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe, stressed the importance of continuous airport upgrades to meet global standards, ensuring sustainable growth and maximising current gains. He highlighted that Zimbabwe’s integration into the global economy necessitates airports that cater to international demands.
Key insights from the CAAZ report include expectations of further growth in air. The data provides valuable insights for helping shape strategies to sustain and accelerate the sector’s recovery and expansion.
