Senegalese Coach Aliou Cisse has resigned from his job as head coach of the Libyan national team.

The 50-year-old, who was appointed in March 2025 on a two-year contract with an option for a third, confirmed his resignation on Wednesday via a statement.

In it, Cisse focuses on the journey with the Mediterranean Knights, but says nothing about the financial challenges he faced during his tenure. As per some reports, he was not paid for months.

“Last March was exceptional for me, as it saw my final camp as head coach of the Libya national team. It was a very enriching adventure both professionally and personally, and I couldn’t leave without addressing you from the heart,” Cisse wrote.

“To the technical staff and the players: despite the difficulties we faced, I am proud of the work we accomplished together and the results we achieved. I truly believe in this team, and I have no doubt that you will continue your efforts to move it forward.”

He oversaw 10 matches, recording 3 wins, 5 draws, and 2 defeats.

“To the Libyan fans: I would like to thank you for the warm welcome you gave me, and for your enthusiasm and unlimited support. I will never forget you, and I know that the Knights of the Mediterranean will always be able to count on you. I wish you all the best in the future.”

Before Libya, Cisse was head coach of his native Senegal for almost a decade from 2015 until 2024, leading them to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021, after losing the 2019 final.
