Amakhosi End Decade-Long Wait For A Trophy

Finally, Kaizer Chiefs will dust off their trophy cabinet after winning the Nedbank Cup against rivals Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

It had been 3,655 calendar days since Amakhosi lifted a major trophy, but the 2-1 win over the Buccaneers has ended the long wait.

The last time Chiefs had won a trophy was on 9 May 2015, when they were crowned league champions, and for years, they found the going tough.

In Durban, Chiefs had a bright start with Pule Mmodi winning a penalty after a foul on him by Deano van Rooyen.

Gaston Sirino stepped up and fired past Sipho Chaine to hand Amakhosi a 1-0 lead ten minutes into the clash.

However, Chiefs’s joy was short-lived. Deon Hotto delivered a good cross, and Evidence Makgopa got to the end of it to head home, and Pirates were level in the 17th minute.

Buoyed by the goal, José Riveiro’s men were on the front foot until the interval and were living up to their favourite tag for the match.

Not to be outdone, Chiefs fought back in the second half and started to dictate terms, much to the relief of their mentor, Nasreddine Nabi, who was looking for his first trophy in his first season with the club.

The Tunisian’s wish was granted with ten minutes of regulation time remaining.

Chiefs pushed forward, and from a cross by Ashley Du Preez, captain Yusuf Maart led by example and scored a stunner with his left foot to hand Chiefs the lead.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys held on until the final whistle.

Chiefs XI: Petersen, Kwinika, Miguel, Dove, Solomons, Maart (c), Cele, Mmodi, Duba, Lilepo, Sirino.

Subs: Ntwari, Mashiane, Shabalala, Castillo, Matlou, Ngcobo, Mthethwa, Du Preez, Morris.

Pirates XI: Chaine, Sibisi (c), Mbokazi, Van Rooyen, Hotto, Mbatha, Makhaula, Maswanganyi, Mofokeng, Nkota, Makgopa.

Subs: Buthelezi, Selepe, Radiopane, Mako, Xoki, Shandu, Kimvuidi, Mabasa, Dlamini.
