There’ll be a lot at stake for both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in this year’s Nedbank Cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday (15h30).

Forget the bragging rights for either of the rivals. Winning the trophy will come with better benefits.

For Pirates, their coach José Riveiro would be pleased to exit on a winning note, considering he’s leaving the club at the end of the season.

“We must focus in a way that we feel that they can beat us in order to avoid it. We are going to try to make Chiefs play badly, and we are going to try to play well,” said Riveiro.

“That’s the intention on the day, and we have already several times (spoken) together, and we want to make sure that we are better again.”

A Pirates win will ensure a three-peat in the Nedbank Cup, winning it three times in a row. Riveiro’s men have had a similar run in the MTN8, taking the trophy home on three consecutive occasions.

Meanwhile, if Chiefs can manage to break Pirates’ stranglehold on the Nedbank Cup, it’ll end a decade-long wait for a major trophy for the Phefeni Glamour Boys, having last tasted success with a league title in 2015.

“As I said, there’s an opportunity as well because, for the final, most of the time you don’t need to motivate the players because they know that it’s a final, it’s a big game,” said Chiefs mentor Nasreddine Nabi.

“And when you are coming from a defeat in the (Soweto) Derby (Chiefs lost 1-0 to Pirates last weekend), and you are going to play against the same opponent, it’s one more source of motivation for the players to prove maybe that the last defeat wasn’t deserved, or that they deserve better,” he added.

The Nedbank Cup champions get R7 million, and the runners-up pocket R2.5 million.

However, victory for either team would be priceless.

It’s all to play for in Durban.
