The ANC in the Norman Mashabane and Peter Mokaba regions in Limpopo have postponed their elective conferences to early May after branches failed to meet the 70% threshold required by the party’s constitution to sit.

Another reason provided for the postponement is to allow the party’s structures to go through the compulsory Foundation Course as mandated by ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula.

Norman Mashabane (formerly Mopani), the biggest region in Limpopo in terms of membership with 129 branches, was supposed to hold its elective conference this weekend,l. However, it had to be postponed because the region needed more than 90 branches out of 129 to conduct the compulsory foundation course.

The regional task team (RTT) spokesperson, Peter Ngobeni, said the conference is postponed to allow their structures to go through the mandatory ANC Foundation course.

Therefore the date for the regional conference is adjusted to take place from 2-4 May 2025, he added.

However, according to African Times News sources, not all the branches successfully held the branch general meetings (BGMs), while some don’t qualify.

“Not all branches will go, for example Ward 26 Markshope Sub-Region (Tzaneen) doesn’t qualify to go to the conference,” one of the branch secretaries in Markshope revealed.

The region has until 13 April 2025 to finalise the course and to ensure that more than 90 branches would have held their general meetings.

Meanwhile in the Peter Mokaba region (which includes the City of Polokwane), the RTT spokesperson Adolph Rapetswa said they took a decision to postpone the conference because their branches also failed to reach the required 70% to hold the conference.

“As an integral part of preparing for a conference, the ANC is currently running Branch General Meetings (BGMs) to nominate delegates and leadership.

“We appreciate the increased pace at which BGMs are taking place whilst noting that we have not yet reached the required 70% threshold to hold a conference.

In this regard, the RTT revised the roadmap and extended the deadline for the conclusion of BGMs to 13 April 2025,” Rapetswa said.

The region, which is the economic hub of Limpopo, has 122 branches and needs more than 85 branches to sit for the conference.

The region’s conference date has been moved to 2-4 May 2025, in a venue set to be announced.
