
Bafana Bafana picked up two red cards and five yellow cards during the FIFA World Cup, which cost approximately R1.5 million.
Prior to the 2026 edition, the world football governing body FIFA introduced monetary sanctions for yellow and red cards.
FIFA confirmed that a yellow card carries a fine of $10, 000, an indirect red-card (dismissal due to two yellow cards) $15, 000 and a straight red-card costing the association $20, 000.
In the opening match against Mexico on 11 June, Bafana Bafana picked up two red cards and two yellow cards.
Midfielders Sphephelo Sithole ($20,000) and Themba Zwane ($20, 000) were given their marching orders, while Nkosinathi Sibisi ($10, 000) and Teboho Mokoena ($10, 000) were cautioned.
Mokoena was again on the receiving end when he was yellow-carded in the next match – a 1-1 draw against Czech Republic on 18 June, which cost the association $10, 000. Furthermore, Thalente Mbatha was also cautioned, resulting in the same $10, 000 penalty.
In the last group match against South Korea on 25 June, left-back Aubrey Modiba received a yellow card, which cost $10, 000. No Bafana Bafana player received a booking in the last 32 match against Canada on Sunday.
Bafana Bafana’s total fines amounted to $90, 000 (+/- R1.5 million).
