The State Government of Rio de Janeiro has implemented an advanced lightning monitoring system to enhance its disaster preparedness during the summer of 2025. This is reported by Toda Palavra, a partner of TV BRICS.

The State Centre for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters has been utilising a real-time lightning visualisation tool. This system provides immediate insights into electrical discharges across municipalities, enabling precise analysis of storm patterns.

By integrating lightning data with radar and satellite imagery, the chentre’s teams can predict rainfall behaviour, determining whether incoming precipitation will be moderate or heavy.

This integration also aids in identifying potential hailstorm formations. The teams already utilise radar images, satellite data, and real-time readings from pluviometers in their monitoring efforts.

The goal is to understand, with greater precision and speed, the projection and progression of potential lightning-accompanied storms. This capability provides meteorologists, hydrologists, and geologists with the necessary information to make informed decisions during severe events, such as recommending siren activations or sending SMS alerts to residents in affected areas.
