Rulani Mokwena’s time with Wydad Casablanca has come to an end.

The two parties have decided to part ways after Wydad’s sixth consecutive league draw against Olympique de Safi on Wednesday.

Speaking to the press after the match, the Soweto-born coach had seemingly thrown in the towel, and on Thursday, after a meeting with Wydad president Hicham Ait Mena, his exit was confirmed.

The 38-year-old was appointed on a three-year contract in July 2024 and tasked with rebuilding Wydad, who finished sixth in the Morocco Botola last term.

Wydad went on a signing spree and brought in about 20 new signings, alongside a technical team that was mainly made up of South Africans, including Allan Freese (first assistant coach), Sinethemba Badela (second assistant coach, Sibusiso Makitla (analyst), and Sibusiso Mahlangu (fitness trainer)

Mokwena also roped in SA footballers in Cassius Mailula and Thembinkosi Lorch, on loan from MLS side Toronto and Mamelodi Sundowns, respectively.

In the end, it was a bridge too far, and Wydad have cut their losses.

African Times has been informed Wydad Casablanca will release a statement either late on Thursday or Friday morning to officially announce Mokwena’s departure.
