BRICS science ministers, meeting in the Indian city of Chennai, called for an effective, sustainable and future-oriented system of cooperation in science, technology and innovation. Key areas of cooperation were outlined in the Chennai Declaration. This was reported by IANS, a TV BRICS partner, citing India’s Minister of Science and Technology Jitendra Singh.

Speaking at the closing session of the 14th BRICS Science Ministers’ Meeting, Jitendra Singh said the discussions had confirmed the central role of science, technology and innovation in shaping a more sustainable, inclusive and environmentally conscious future.

BRICS representatives discussed a wide range of issues, from artificial intelligence and high-performance computing to quantum technologies, advanced materials, biotechnology, healthcare, climate and sustainable development – all of which reflect challenges that the group’s countries can address through joint efforts.

In addition, the declaration welcomes the establishment of the BRICS Youth Startup Platform, highlighting the need to encourage funding for early-stage startups and companies in the growth phase.

Jitendra Singh said BRICS cooperation in science, technology and innovation should move from sustained dialogue to tangible results. This requires strengthening mechanisms for implementing joint projects, establishing shared platforms, coordinating calls for proposals and ensuring open access to research infrastructure.

The BRICS Science Ministers’ Meeting was held at the initiative of India, which holds the BRICS Chairship throughout 2026.
