The country’s petrochemical sector continues to grow, supported by stable production and international cooperation

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi has announced that Egypt produces approximately 1.1 million tonnes of methanol annually, fully meeting domestic industrial demand while exporting surplus volumes to global markets, reports Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.
The minister emphasised the strategic importance of methanol production in supporting local industries and enhancing export potential. He also highlighted the need to explore expansion opportunities in response to rising international demand.
Domestic supply has expanded significantly, rising from around 20,000 tonnes annually in the early stages to nearly 200,000 tonnes today. This growth has supported downstream industries, where methanol is used to produce higher-value materials, amplifying its economic impact.
The sector has also demonstrated strong export performance; over the past 15 years, more than 12 million tonnes have been supplied to international markets.
In 2024, the Egyptian government published its National Strategy for Low-Carbon Hydrogen. According to the document, the country aims to capture up to 8 per cent of the global market by 2040, producing 5.6 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually. Domestic consumption by that date could reach 3.6 million tonnes per year, with some of it being used for methanol production. Implementation of the strategy is estimated to increase Egypt’s gross domestic product (GDP) by US$10–18 billion and create more than 100,000 jobs by 2040.
